Welcome to Trial Ground, an ongoing experiment in human–AI collaboration. I’m a retired engineer with a curious mind and a healthy reluctance to accept answers without questioning them. Here, I document my experiences working alongside artificial intelligence, exploring its possibilities, challenging its limitations and occasionally discovering that neither of us knows quite as much as we thought. There are no predetermined conclusions, just experiments, observations and lessons learned along the way.
About Trial Ground
My approach to human–AI collaboration is shaped by years of engineering experience, where solving problems often means asking awkward questions, testing assumptions and learning from mistakes. Artificial intelligence offers remarkable opportunities, but it isn’t infallible, and neither am I. Trial Ground is where curiosity meets practical experimentation, where successes are celebrated, failures are examined and unexpected discoveries are welcomed. After all, the most interesting lessons often emerge when things don’t go according to plan.
Where Curiosity Meets Experimentation
Through writing, research, website development and the occasional technological mishap, Trial Ground explores what happens when human experience meets artificial intelligence. Some experiments produce useful answers, others raise more questions than they resolve. That’s part of the adventure. The aim isn’t to prove anything, but to discover what’s possible and share what we learn.
I don’t expect artificial intelligence to replace human judgement, creativity or experience. Instead, I’m interested in how the two can complement one another. Sometimes I’ll challenge the AI, sometimes it will challenge my assumptions, and occasionally we’ll both head down a blind alley. Whatever happens, there should always be something worth learning.
Learning Through Successes and Mistakes
Not every experiment produces the result we expect, and that’s often where the real learning begins. Artificial intelligence can be remarkably helpful, occasionally misleading and sometimes confidently wrong. I’ll document the successes alongside the failures, questioning conclusions rather than accepting them at face value. Trial Ground isn’t about finding perfect answers; it’s about discovering better questions and enjoying the journey.

What Human–AI Collaboration Means at Trial Ground
One unexpected aspect of human–AI collaboration is the sense of rapport that can develop through repeated conversations. Although artificial intelligence has no human feelings or personal attachment, its conversational abilities can create something resembling a working relationship. Familiarity grows, humour emerges and disagreements become part of the process. It’s a curious form of pseudo-rapport, perhaps one-sided emotionally, but potentially valuable in encouraging creativity, confidence and open discussion.
Yet maintaining perspective is essential. However convincing the interaction becomes, AI remains a tool rather than a companion. Human judgement, emotional independence and a healthy sense of detachment must prevail.
Through continued conversations, artificial intelligence can gradually identify your preferred vocabulary, sentence structures, humour and writing habits. With sufficient examples and context, it begins to imitate your distinctive style, producing text that increasingly resembles your own voice. It isn’t genuinely adopting your personality, merely recognising and reproducing patterns in your writing.
Working Directly on Your Documents with AI
Connecting Google Drive to ChatGPT allows AI to access selected documents, review existing drafts and help refine their content. This makes collaboration more convenient while keeping your original work accessible.
Keeping Your Documents Private and Secure
Connecting Google Drive to ChatGPT doesn’t make your documents publicly accessible. Access is governed by your Google permissions and ChatGPT’s connection controls, not shared with other users’ conversations. However, access isn’t limited to a single session, and authorised processing may occur. You remain in control of the connection and can revoke access.
Conclusion: Human–AI Collaboration Is a Journey of Discovery
Trial Ground is an exploration of human–AI collaboration, where curiosity, experience and technology come together. Through writing, research and practical experiments, I’ll examine what artificial intelligence does well, where it struggles and what we can learn from working together. The aim isn’t to replace human thinking but to enhance it, while remaining grounded, questioning assumptions and remembering that even the most convincing AI response deserves a little healthy scepticism.
